The Many Shades of the Mighty Mango

The Many Shades of the Mighty Mango

“If summer comes, can Mangoes be far behind.” Or something of the sort is probably what Percy Bysshe Shelly would have written about the Mango if he had had a chance to sample this ‘king of fruits’. This sweet, intoxicating, fruit has captivated human hearts and emotions for centuries. It holds deep within its core, the scent of summer and the promise of heaven.

Indisputably, the one that outshines all other varieties of this seductive fruit is the Alphonso Mango. With more than 65,000 acres under Mango cultivation, Ratnagiri is the largest producer of Alphonso Mangoes in India. Nestled among gentle mountain slopes, hugging the Konkan coast, these unassuming orchards produce the finest Alphonso Mango in the world. The favourite of connoisseurs everywhere, the Alphonso can revitalize you with its fragrant, succulent sweetness and its cooling, nourishing texture.

While the markets are filled with mangoes in every shade of yellow, it's often difficult to identify the best quality ones. The difference between the varieties of mango lies in the fruits’ skin. The Ratnagiri Alphonso Mangoes have a tinge of saffron, and their skin is more delicate as compared to other varieties. Its smooth, bright skin reflects the buttery, succulent flesh within. With hints of honey and the texture of ripe peach, the Alphonso makes for the perfect dessert. No wonder it makes its way into the menu of some of the most sought-after restaurants and bars around the world.

In terms of nutrition too, the Mango can hold its own against any fruit. Mangoes are rich in Vitamin C, which boost your immune system – a good way to beat the pandemic blues and stay on top of things.

Mangoes are a versatile fruit and can be had in a number of ways. From chutneys to smoothies, here are some innovative ways to enjoy this impeccable fruit.

Mango Mastani (Mango Smoothie)

As far as smoothies go, nothing beats a Mango smoothie. It’s a great way to refresh yourself on a hot day.

1 Cup Mango, Diced

2 Long Scoops of Mangoes

1 Cup Full Cream Milk

2 Scoops of Vanilla Ice Cream

Pop the Mango slices into the blender with a little sweetener or sugar, add a cup of milk and blend to a smooth thick milkshake. Add ice cubes for a perfectly cooling, refreshing drink.

Arrange the long scoops of Mango on either side of the glass, add a scoop of Vanilla as a separator, then pour the smoothie into the glass. Top off with a scoop of ice cream and some diced Mango and garnish with a sprig of mint.

PS: To make it extra sinful, garnish it with some chopped dry fruits like pista and almonds.
