This quick-cooking dal can be prepared in around 30 minutes, for a delicious and comforting meal. Urad Dal Chilka is an essential component of fermented batters for idli, medu vada and dosa. Dahi vada would not be the same without this dal. It is also used to make fritters, maa ki dal and khichdi.

How to use: To prepare Urad dal, for dal or curry, soak for 4-5 hours and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles. To prepare dosa batter, wash once it’s soaked and grind into a paste.
You can also fry them whole to add them to tadkas and chutney.
